In January 2012, Larry Berman assumed the position as Founding Dean of the Honors College at Georgia State University. His prior administrative experience includes serving as Founding Director of the University of California Washington Center, Director of the UC Davis Washington Program, Department Chair and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and Policy. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis.
He has written extensively on Vietnam War related topics, including Planning a Tragedy: The Americanization of the War in Vietnam (Norton, 1982), Lyndon Johnson’s War: The Road To Stalemate in Vietnam, (Norton, 1989) No Peace, No Honor: Nixon, Kissinger and Betrayal in Vietnam (Free Press, 2001) and Perfect Spy: The Incredible Double Life of Pham Xuan An, Time Magazine Reporter and Vietnamese Communist Agent.(Smithsonian Books/Harper Collins 2007) In October 2012, HarperCollins published ZUMWALT: The Life and Times of Admiral Elmo Russell “Bud” Zumwalt, Jr.”. Dean Berman has been featured on C-Span’s Book TV, the History Channel’s Secrets of War; The Presidents: To The Best of My Ability; Bill Moyers PBS series, The Public Mind; David McCullough’s American Experience series, “Vietnam: A Television History;” and Marvin Kalb’s retrospective on Vietnam. He is also the author of an introductory college textbook on American Government, Approaching Democracy, now in its 8th edition.
Berman has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies. He has been a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. and scholar in residence at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Center in Bellagio, Italy. He is a co-recipient of the Richard E. Neustadt Award, given annually for the best book published during the year in the field of the American Presidency. He received the Bernath Lecture Prize, given annually by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations to a scholar whose work has most contributed to our understanding of foreign relations. In 2010, he received the highest honor that the Davis Division of the Academic Senate accords its members, the Faculty Research Lecturer Award. In that same year he received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research. In 2011, he received the Department of the Navy Vice Admiral Edwin B. Hooper Research Grant to support archival research related to ZUMWALT.
Most recently, in 2012, Berman was appointed to the advisory committee for The Education Center at The Wall, a learning facility planned for construction on the grounds of the Vietnam Veterans and Lincoln Memorials.
